Clipper III is the third Teknicraft passenger catamaran to go into service on the commuter route from Pine Harbour to Auckland. The design called for a passenger vessel which could carry 50 passengers at an economical cruising speed of 28 knots in almost any weather conditions. In addition, the vessel needed to be able to be manned by a single crewman.

The solution was an asymmetrical wheelhouse with a purpose designed docking station, utilising HamiltonJet's BlueArrow control system. The vessel has proven its capability by being able to operate at cruising speed for more than 98% of the time during the first 2 years of operation.
